Strengths and weaknesses
Overcast
- Smart Speed saves real time without sounding unnatural
- Clean, fast interface with sensible defaults
- Collects very little, and nothing linked to you
- Apple devices only, plus a basic web player
- Fewer organizing tools than Pocket Casts
- The new audio effects need Premium
Overcast is the best podcast player for iPhone. Smart Speed trims silences without making voices sound rushed, Voice Boost evens out quiet hosts, and the app now shows transcripts too. It's free with small ads for other podcasts, while Premium removes them and adds audio tools like an EQ and noise reduction. It also skips the tracking common in free apps. The catch: it's Apple-only, apart from a basic web player.

SoundCloud
- Huge library of mixes, remixes and new artists
- Free listening with a usable mobile app
- Creators can upload and share directly
- Ads and cross-app tracking on the free tier
- Cluttered interface and patchy recommendations
- Dec 2025 breach exposed many users' email addresses
SoundCloud is where you hear music before it reaches the big platforms: bedroom producers, DJ mixes, unofficial remixes and new artists uploading directly. The free tier is generous, and a late-2025 homepage refresh made it easier to find what your friends and favorite artists like. The catch is a cluttered app, ads, tracking and a December 2025 security breach. Get it for underground and electronic music.
