Strengths and weaknesses
Runna
- Plans built around your race date and schedule
- Workouts sync to popular watches
- Plans adapt as your fitness changes
- $119.99 a year is steep
- No free tier after the trial
- Identifiers are used for tracking
Runna builds a training plan around your race, your schedule and your current fitness, then adjusts it as you log runs. Workouts sync to an Apple Watch, Garmin, COROS or Fitbit, and plans cover everything from a first 5K to an ultramarathon. Coaches design the plans, and a 2026 partnership with Loughborough University is reviewing how they handle load and recovery. It's priced like a coach rather than an app, so casual joggers can skip it.

MyFitnessPal
- Massive database covers most branded foods
- Connects with many apps and wearables
- Familiar, easy daily logging
- User-submitted entries are often inaccurate
- Barcode scanning and ad-free logging need Premium
- App Store label shows identifiers used for tracking
MyFitnessPal is the calorie counter most people try first, and its huge food database is the biggest reason to stick with it. But much of that database is user-submitted, so errors creep in, and the free version leans on ads while barcode scanning, meal scan and voice logging sit behind Premium. New AI Coach tools and GLP-1 logging help paying users. For basic calorie counting it still works, with more friction than before.
