Strengths and weaknesses
Mercury Weather
- Gorgeous, glanceable charts
- Trip Forecast handles road trips
- Collects no data according to its label
- Apple devices only
- Fewer map layers than radar-focused apps
Mercury Weather is for people who want a forecast they can read in two seconds. Smooth charts show temperature and rain across the day, rain timing is easy to read, and Trip Forecast shows the weather wherever you'll be on each day of a journey. Widgets and the Apple Watch app are lovely. It's Apple-only and lighter on maps than radar apps, but its App Store label says it collects nothing at all.

RadarScope
- Native radar data, not smoothed maps
- No data collected per its privacy label
- Pro tiers add lightning, archives and models
- Steep learning curve for casual users
- Paid upfront, with extra subscriptions
- No everyday forecast view
RadarScope shows you what the radar actually sees. Instead of a smoothed rain map, you get single-site radar products such as velocity, updated every two to ten minutes, with NWS warnings and storm tracks on top. That's how spotters find hook echoes and debris signatures. It costs money upfront and assumes you know what you're looking at, but nothing on a phone beats it for severe weather.
