Strengths and weaknesses

Linear

  • Extremely fast and keyboard-friendly
  • Sensible defaults with little setup
  • Automatic status updates from pull requests
  • Less customizable than enterprise trackers
  • Built for software teams, awkward for other work

Linear is the issue tracker developers actually enjoy using. It is very fast, fully keyboard-driven and opinionated in a good way, with cycles, projects, roadmaps and triage that keep work moving without endless configuration. Git integrations update issues automatically, and you can assign issues to AI coding agents. The trade-off is flexibility: if you need deeply custom workflows, fields and reports, it can feel limiting.

Docker Desktop

  • Easiest way to run containers on any desktop
  • Compose makes multi-service apps simple
  • Free for personal use and small businesses
  • Heavy on memory, CPU and battery
  • Larger companies must pay per user

Docker Desktop is the easiest way to run containers on your own machine. It bundles the Docker engine, Compose, a local Kubernetes cluster and a friendly dashboard, and it can now run AI models and MCP tools locally too. The downsides: it uses a lot of memory and battery, especially on laptops, and larger companies need a paid subscription. Still essential for most backend and full-stack developers.
