Docker Desktop review
Build and run containers locally on any desktop
- Docker, Inc.
- Free + paid plans
- Mac, Windows, Linux
Does it deserve #7?
The verdict
Docker Desktop is the easiest way to run containers on your own machine. It bundles the Docker engine, Compose, a local Kubernetes cluster and a friendly dashboard, and it can now run AI models and MCP tools locally too. The downsides: it uses a lot of memory and battery, especially on laptops, and larger companies need a paid subscription. Still essential for most backend and full-stack developers.
- Docker engine and Compose bundled
- One-click local Kubernetes
- Model Runner for local AI
- Image scanning with Docker Scout
