Strengths and weaknesses
Khan Academy
- Core lessons and practice are free, with no ads
- Practice adapts to what you have and haven't mastered
- Excellent for school math, from basics to calculus
- School-style format can drag for adult learners
- Arts and humanities coverage is thinner than math and science
Khan Academy is the best free learning resource you can install. Clear videos and mastery-based practice cover math from arithmetic to calculus, plus science, economics, grammar and computing. It is run by a nonprofit, so there are no ads and no core lessons behind a paywall. The catch is a school-like format that can feel dry for adults. Get it for yourself or your kids.

Anki
- Smart scheduling means less review time for the same recall
- Free and open source on desktop, Android and the web
- Fully customizable cards, decks and study settings
- Dated interface with a steep learning curve
- The iPhone and iPad app, AnkiMobile, is a paid download
Anki is the most effective flashcard tool you can use, if you are willing to put in the work. Its spaced repetition scheduler, including the newer FSRS option, shows each card just before you would forget it. It is free and open source everywhere except iPhone, where AnkiMobile is a one-time purchase. The catch: the interface is dated and setup takes effort. Ideal for med students and serious language learners.
